How to Measure for Countertops (Before the Template)

Rough-measure tips for homeowners planning a remodel — what to capture, what to leave for the fabricator, and common mistakes that throw off a quote.

StoneForm Countertops

A rough measure helps you budget before cabinets are final — but final fabrication always needs a professional template after bases are set. Here is what homeowners can capture safely, and what to leave to the fabricator.

What to Capture for a Rough Estimate

Run lengths

Measure each countertop run wall-to-wall or cabinet end-to-end. Note islands separately.

Depths & overhangs

Standard depth is often ~25.5" including overhang. Note breakfast bars and seating overhangs.

Photos of corners

Photograph inside corners, sink walls, and appliance openings. Odd angles matter.

What not to cut to

Do not order material from tape measures alone. Final digital template after cabinets is required for a perfect fit.

Sink & cooktop plans

Know if sinks are undermount or farmhouse and whether the cooktop is cooktop-only or range.

Backsplash height

Note if you want 4" splash, full-height, or none — it changes material needs.

Rough-Measure Checklist

  • —Sketch the kitchen bird’s-eye and label each run A/B/C
  • —Write lengths in inches; round up slightly for budgeting
  • —Mark sink centerline and dishwasher location
  • —Wait for professional template after cabinets are leveled and set

Pro Tip: Templating before cabinets are final is the #1 cause of misfit tops. StoneForm templates after bases are installed and screwed off.

Bring your sketch to a free estimate. We will convert rough numbers into a realistic square-footage range, recommend materials, and schedule template when your remodel is ready.
